Patting Wombats

On our second day in the Yara Valley we visited the Healesville Animal Sanctuary as my lovely brother and sister-in-law bought Bro and I an Experience with a Wombat for Christmas.

This place is awesome as it rescues injured animals, then rehabilitates them wherever possible. It also has an amazing collection of animals and is just beautiful to wonder around.

We all did the experience so had about 20 minutes in an enclosure with the very cuddly Alinta-an 18 month old baby wombat who had been rescued from her mum's pouch when she was a joey. She was super friendly and super overweight so is currently on a diet. We learnt lots of things about wombats, including the fact that they are most closely related to the Koala, and their pouches face backwards so that when they dig holes their pouches don't fill with soil (incidentally so do Koala pouches, but this is less convenient as koalas live up trees!!)

An awesome day and an awesome pressie! Thanks Mark and Antonia! :) xxxx
